As the centrepiece of the Inis Meáin’s Autumn/Winter 17 collection, the company have collaborated with Irish label Sphere One on the New Aran Fisherman’s Sweater. Reimagined by Sphere One, they have taken inspiration from the tradition of women knitters of the Aran Islands. It brings you the quality and craftsmanship which has come to be associated with the sweater and applies a new and careful approach. The product of this pairing is a garment which is experimental in design, practical and comfortable, weaving both modernity and tradition into a beautifully crafted knit; perfect for the contemporary hardworking fisherman.
Speaking of the collaboration, Lucy Downes, Creative Director of Sphere One says: “In thinking about this project, I simply imaged myself as a knitter on Inis Meáin in the 1950s, and wondered what her contemporary descendent might knit for someone she really cares about out on the seas.” She goes on to say, “That impulse from maker to weaver, the thoughtfulness to cosset and protect, is the kernel of excitement for me in this collaboration with Inis Meáin, along with the technical challenge that the functionality of the garment calls for.”
